Before they pull out a surprise, the self-important head of the library board is murdered. A day or two later one of the first editions are stolen – then another. Who is thieving – and is it related to the murder?
The premise of a library inside a historic lighthouse is what drew me to the series. Eva Gates says right at the beginning of this book that the idea of a lighthouse being big enough to house a fully operational library with separate living accommodation is a fantasy so that really sets the tone for the audiobook right from the start.
Plot Summary
For 10 years Lucy has enjoyed her job poring over rare tomes of literature for the Harvard Library, but she has not enjoyed the demands of her family’s social whorl or her sort-of engagement to the staid son of her father’s law partner. But when her 10-year relationship implodes, Lucy realizes that the plot of her life is in need of a serious rewrite.
Calling on her aunt Ellen, Lucy hopes that a little fun in the Outer Banks sun – and some confections from her cousin Josie’s bakery – will help clear her head. But her retreat quickly turns into an unexpected opportunity when Aunt Ellen gets her involved in the lighthouse library tucked away on Bodie Island.
Lucy is thrilled to land a librarian job in her favorite place in the world. Story: Starting a new series from the first audiobook of the Lighthouse Library Mystery Audiobook series is so much fun. It combines two of my favorite things: libraries and lighthouses. How wonderful would it be to have a library in a lighthouse? This is the setting for this wonderful new to me series by a new to me, but becoming one of my favorite authors.
The mystery was good, plenty of suspects and clues, and the ending left me pleasantly surprised. The setting is charming and perfect for a cozy mystery.
The cast of characters in By Book or by Crook Audiobook Mp3 is interesting, especially Bertie, Charlene, Ronald and Lucy’s Himalayan, Charles. Lucy herself needs to mature a bit after working on old books of literature and being fairly protected by her lawyer father’s family and her lawyer boyfriend in Boston. In this first book, she is naive and not ready to take on an investigation into a murder and theft of valuable items. I’m hoping in the next audiobook, Lucy will be a little more mature and a few other characters will be a bit more believable.
A really great cozy, one of my favorites among the sea of them that I listened to!
Narrator:
Elise Arsenault’s voice was not a good fit for the characters or the location. At times the narrator was dull and seemed uninterested in the story which was the good news. When she attempted regional accents they were inconsistent at best. The many completely mispronounced place names in the Outer Banks were cringe-worthy.
