Dune Messiah Audiobook is a science fiction story by American writer Frank Herbert, the second in his Dune Chronicles of seven novels. As is often the case, it does not live up to the high standard of the first installment, but it is still pretty good.
Dune Messiah does a nice job telling the story of Paul, and overall was an enjoyable story. It´s mainly a psychological warfare battle with psi weapons, many conspiracies, less action, and very good dialogues.
Highly recommended!
Plot Summary
Dune Messiah continues the story of Paul Atreides, better known – and feared – as the man christened Muad’Dib. As Emperor of the Known Universe, he possesses more power than a single man was ever meant to wield.
Worshipped as a religious icon by the fanatical Fremens, Paul faces the enmity of the political houses he displaced when he assumed the throne – and a conspiracy conducted within his own sphere of influence.
And even as House Atreides begins to crumble around him from the machinations of his enemies, the true threat to Paul comes to his lover, Chani, and the unborn heir to his family’s dynasty…
About the Author
Frank Herbert (1920-86) was born in Tacoma, Washington and worked as a reporter and later editor of a number of West Coast newspapers before becoming a full-time writer.
His first SF story was published in 1952 but he achieved fame more than ten years later with the publication in Analog of ‘Dune World’ and ‘The Prophet of Dune’ that were amalgamated in the novel Dune in 1965.
Reviews
Dune Messiah Audiobook mp3 is, in many ways, even better than Dune, and focuses a great deal on some of the odder issues surrounding Paul’s prescient visions and his sister, Alia, who is now in her teens.
It cannot stand up to the wonder of discovering the world of Arrakis for the first time, but it certainly has other strengths.
The setting and the writing style are mostly the same as in the first book. The story though has changed dramatically. Again, Frank Herbert did a ridiculous amount of research before writing this book. It shows how he truly understands the mechanics of economics, politics, and religion.
Narration
The narration by multicast and characterization of the actors was wonderful. They each read a separate chapter. They fit the characters they portray, and individualize each character, giving the story a richness and fullness, a 3D immersive experience.
They are all great readers, and I love the idea, but it would have helped if the readers had some common ground rules. It’s a minor quibble, but sometimes the characters (like Stilgar) have thick accents and at other times they do not. It makes it a little hard to keep track of who is speaking. Overall, it worked well and was an enjoyable listen, and it did not get in the way of the book and may have even helped.
